I don't really feel like running this site for free, paying the expenses out of my own pocket. So I need to restrict the members practice of putting enough information in their profiles for people to find them on the internet without paying a membership fee. For example, I don't allow them to put email addresses like jake2101@yahoo.com in their profiles. Or any version of yahoo that they can think of like ya hoo or the yellow y. You know what I mean.
Recently I decided that I'm not going to let them use their real names for member names. Like LuisOrshallsky or BobThompson or anything that would let someone look them up in the phone book. I'm rejecting a lot of profiles even though I'm using big red letters to warn them when they register. I tell them to simply Reply to the rejection letter with a new handle. And really, who wants to be dumb enough to put their real names out there on the internet for spammers, identity thieves and so on? Apparently a lot of people. Very few of those rejected for this reason have replied with new handles.
There's another class of member name....those that when I do a google search are clearly handles in Yahoo or Hotmail. Here's one obc87c2007. Doesn't make a lot of sense as a handle, but when I search google there's the guy all over yahoo and it's clear it's the same guy. So ixnay on that member name also.
What do you think?
