Workflow suggestions for patches and updating?

Postby funops on Thu Jun 05, 2008 8:32 pm

I just received a zip file of patches that address a number of the issues I was experiencing. I am curious if anyone would like to share how they go about updating. There are 84 files, many of which will overwrite files that I have made changes to (be it the main index.html template, some of the language texts, the main CSS, etc., etc. Basically just cosmetic stuff on my end as I have not altered any of the PHP programming though have commented out a few things I didn't want displayed, and so forth. So I was basically curious how folks go about updating in these kinds of situations. Obviously first a backup of course. And I believe I can pretty well tell which files I've worked on since installation because the date/timestamp of those files differ from the date/timestamp of the files per the installation itself. Then install these new files, make sure everything is running okay, and begin reworking one by one those that I've modified previously where necessary.

Do you keep a list, such as a change-log, as you work making your changes? Store changed files in a special section on your computer with directory structure intact so you know exactly which files you have modified? Etc.

Just curious how folks go about this.

This software(Beyond Compare) may be of some use to you as it combines your changes and the new changes. they have a free trial period so you can check it out.

Beyond Compare looks like it will be quite helpful, thanks. I'll have to study it some to learn what's what but in the most basic sense of it, pretty much without knowing how to use it, it quickly isolated all files that I've changed since the original installation (I have a full copy of the original installation so I downloaded the full current installation and simply ran Beyond Compare on the two, then chose a "New with Orphans" option and there I saw only the files I had since changed). A good start, thanks for the suggestion.

Personally I use dreamweaver to make backups of the original directory's then install the upgraded or modified directory's

and can still pull any old code in as needed.
